Matthew 7:24 – 29

24 “Therefore whoever hears these sayings of Mine, and does them, I will liken him to a wise man who built his house on the rock:

25 and the rain descended, the floods came, and the winds blew and beat on that house; and it did not fall, for it was founded on the rock.

26 “But everyone who hears these sayings of Mine, and does not do them, will be like a foolish man who built his house on the sand:

27 and the rain descended, the floods came, and the winds blew and beat on that house; and it fell. And great was its fall.”

28 And so it was, when Jesus had ended these sayings, that the people were astonished at His teaching,

29 for He taught them as one having authority, and not as the scribes.

When Jesus begins a statement with the word “therefore” it means because of what I just said, you need to take heed to these comments.

Jesus had just told us those believers who did not follow all of His words would be rejected.

When we listen to the instructions Christ gives us and we follow them we are wise. We are wise like a good builder of a house. We place our house on a good solid foundation. Jesus tells Peter that the foundation of his belief that Jesus is the Son of God, is the foundation of kingdom of heaven, it is this foundation and following the instructions of the master of the kingdom which makes us wise and keeps us from being rejected by Christ.

When the perils of this worldly life, the evil storms of this life batter us and beat at us, we withstand them because we have our faith built on the rock, Jesus the Son of God, and following His instructions lead us along the narrow path to salvation.

But if we hear Christ's words, and we ignore any of them then we are foolish and are building our hope of salvation on sand.

Sand is not a good foundation, when water comes it goes where the water takes it and leaves behind a building with no solid base, a building which will collapse under the storms the forces of evil assail the followers of Christ with.

To have the instructions on how to reach salvation and obtain eternal life, and not use those guides, is foolish indeed. It creates an eternal disaster which is very avoidable. It is negligent to ignore Christ's instructions.

Jesus was teaching people who were familiar with religious teachings of the word of God, but they were amazed at how much this man knew, to us it is not so amazing because we know He is the word of God,(John 1:1 – 4)

He could teach with authority because He was the source of the word. He was not like the scribes which were copiers of His word, He was the author.

When we listen to the instructions given by God on what to do to obtain eternal life and we ignore part of the instructions, we end up on one of the wide paths to destruction, we are rejected because we ignored the warning signs, and we are very foolish indeed because we have the true word given by the source.
