Matthew 26:14 – 16

Judas Agrees to Betray Jesus

14 Then one of the twelve, called Judas Iscariot, went to the chief priests

15 and said, “What are you willing to give me if I deliver Him to you?” And they counted out to him thirty pieces of silver.

16 So from that time he sought opportunity to betray Him.

Judas was so enraged by the waste of the costly fragrant ointment which was used on Jesus, so he went to the chief priests to get his revenge. He was aware of their desire to apprehend Jesus and he saw a way he could recover some of the money.

He asked them to make him an offer for his services in betraying Jesus to them. They gave him 30 pieces of silver. (In 2018 it was estimated these coins would be worth roughly $200 USD)

Immediately after accepting the sum from the high priests he began seeking the opportunity to betray Jesus to the Jews as he did in verse 48.
