Matthew 24:9 - 14

The Fall of Jerusalem

9 “Then they will deliver you up to tribulation and kill you, and you will be hated by all nations for My name’s sake.

10 And then many will be offended, will betray one another, and will hate one another.

11 Then many false prophets will rise up and deceive many.

12 And because lawlessness will abound, the love of many will grow cold.

13 But he who endures to the end shall be saved.

14 And this gospel of the kingdom will be preached in all the world as a witness to all the nations, and then the end will come.

In the ninth verse of this chapter it deals with the conditions which would happen in the province of Judea, and how the Jews, particularly the ones who had converted to Christianity would be persecuted by the Romans.

In verse 10 it refers to the Jews of Judea, how they would be divided among themselves even while continuing to fight the Romans. The Jewish historian, Josephus wrote in his fifth book, chapter 6 paragraph 1, “Now while the factions fought one against another, the people were their prey, on both sides, as we have said already; and that part of the people who would not join with them in their wicked practices, were plundered by both factions....And when the parts that were interposed between their possessions were burnt by them, they left a space wherein they might fight with each other, for this internal sedition did not cease even when the Romans were encamped near their very walls...for they never suffered anything that was worse from the Romans than they made each other suffer.”

Verse 11 is the same as verse 5, there will be those who claim to be sent by Christ which are false prophets who are teaching doctrines which do not align with the teaching of Jesus. They will come in the name of Jesus and deceive many who think they are following the words of Jesus.

In verse 12 it shows many of Jesus followers would lose their love for God because of the lawless conditions of the times prior to the fall of Jerusalem. Lawless meaning they would be ignoring the words of God.

Verse 13 shows Jesus assurance to those who remain faithful to the end, meaning the end of the Jewish – Roman war, but also applies to all who are slain in the fighting and siege providing they were faithful until death.

Verse 14 means the Gospel of Christ would be taught to all of the inhabited earth before the end of Jerusalem would happen, the end of Jerusalem happened in 70 A.D. The Gospel was given to all nations by that time. This happened and was recorded by Paul in: Romans 10:18 (But I say, have they not heard? Yes indeed: “Their sound has gone out to all the earth, And their words to the ends of the world.”)

Colossians 1:23 ( if indeed you continue in the faith, grounded and steadfast, and are not moved away from the hope of the gospel which you heard, which was preached to every creature under heaven, of which I, Paul, became a minister. )
