Jude 20 - 23

20 But you, beloved, building yourselves up on your most holy faith, praying in the Holy Spirit, 21 keep yourselves in the love of God, looking for the mercy of our Lord Jesus Christ unto eternal life.

22 And on some have compassion, making a distinction; 23 but others save with fear, pulling them out of the fire, hating even the garment defiled by the flesh.

Jude says to build up yourselves using your faith, with all of these issues involving false teachers, we need to let our faith keep us strong.

Is it a blind faith that builds us up? No our faith uses knowledge, the knowledge of God's word, which is the basis of our faith in God, our faith comes from the word of God. (Romans 10:17)

When we pray in the Holy Spirit, we are praying according to the teachings of God which are given to us by the inspired scriptures which come from the Holy Spirit.

We keep ourselves in the love of God by keeping His commandments. (John 14:15 – 23) By keeping His commandments we can expect mercy on the day of judgment.

There are Christians who slip and fall off of the narrow path, we need to guide them and help them be restored through our love for them. (Galatians 6:1) We have to make distinctions because some are errors and mistakes, while other sin is deliberate and willful.

Those who are in the latter category deserve no mercy, but we should deal with them sternly and with hope they may be saved from this sin, there are some instances of trying to save someone from physical death where it is necessary to cause more harm to them, such as someone drowning, may have to grab whatever is near or can be grasped, even if it is the hair of their head. In the case of an automobile wreck and someone is severely injured but the car is aflame it is necessary to move the injured even it it causes more injuries and pain to keep them from dying in the burning car. Sometimes someone who is sinning has to be expelled from the church because their attitude is one of willful sin and it is their desire to continue. You expel them hoping for them to understand the severity of their sin and the consequence of it.

We are to hate everything to do with the earthly sin which we are trying to help them escape from.
