Matthew 20:29 – 34

The Blind Men of Jericho

29 Now as they went out of Jericho, a great multitude followed Him.

30 And behold, two blind men sitting by the road, when they heard that Jesus was passing by, cried out, saying, “Have mercy on us, O Lord, Son of David!”

31 Then the multitude warned them that they should be quiet; but they cried out all the more, saying, “Have mercy on us, O Lord, Son of David!”

32 So Jesus stood still and called them, and said, “What do you want Me to do for you?”

33 They said to Him, “Lord, that our eyes may be opened.”

34 So Jesus had compassion and touched their eyes. And immediately their eyes received sight, and they followed Him.

Jesus almost always had many people around him whether he traveled or remained in one place, they were not always wanting to be near him for the same reason, some sincerely wanted to know more about the Gospel, some were wanting to have their diseases and ailments cured, and others had ulterior motives. (John 6:26[Jesus answered them and said, “Most assuredly, I say to you, you seek Me, not because you saw the signs, but because you ate of the loaves and were filled.])

These two blind men had enough knowledge of who Jesus was to know He came from the lineage of King David, so they called Him, Son of David.

The multitude did not want the journey to be interrupted, so they tried to quiet the blind men, but the men became even louder in their cries to get Jesus attention. Their persistence was like others in the scriptures who showed great faith in Jesus.

Jesus stopped and asked the men what they wanted, He did not ask them to come to Him because of their handicap it would have been a hardship for them to walk to His location.

A person's eyesight is one of the most important senses a person has, it was foremost on these two men in having that given to them.

Jesus did not have to touch people to heal them but He did in this instance. The two men immediately received their sight, they showed their gratitude and their faith by following Jesus as he moved on.
