Luke 1:51 – 56

The Song of Mary (Part 2)

51 He has shown strength with His arm; He has scattered the proud in the imagination of their hearts.

52 He has put down the mighty from their thrones, And exalted the lowly.

53 He has filled the hungry with good things, And the rich He has sent away empty.

54 He has helped His servant Israel, In remembrance of His mercy,

55 As He spoke to our fathers, To Abraham and to his seed forever.”

56 And Mary remained with her about three months, and returned to her house.

Mary is able to make these statements through the power of the Holy Spirit which is in her because she is carrying the Son of God. It is the same as the statements made by Elizabeth which was carrying the baby which Gabriel had said would be filled with the Holy Spirit from the womb. (Luke 1:15)

God always recognizes humility and rewards it with His favor but knocks those who exalt themselves from their high perches.

This is figurative in form but teaches the same principles as verses 50 through 52.

God has helped the people of Israel because of His mercy he has for them.

Mary is speaking of the promise which God had made to Abraham about having an heir which would bless the entire world. (Genesis 18:18; 22:18; 26:4) The child she was carrying would fulfill that promise.

Mary remained with Elizabeth until the time for the birth of her son, John the baptist. Then she returned to the town of Nazareth in the province of Galilee.
