Luke 1:34 – 38

Christ’s Birth Announced to Mary (Conclusion)

34 Then Mary said to the angel, “How can this be, since I do not know a man?”

35 And the angel answered and said to her, “The Holy Spirit will come upon you, and the power of the Highest will overshadow you; therefore, also, that Holy One who is to be born will be called the Son of God.

36 Now indeed, Elizabeth your relative has also conceived a son in her old age; and this is now the sixth month for her who was called barren.

37 For with God nothing will be impossible.”

38 Then Mary said, “Behold the maidservant of the Lord! Let it be to me according to your word.” And the angel departed from her.

Mary asks the angel how can she become pregnant because she does not have sexual relations with any man. She was intelligent enough to understand a woman can not become pregnant if she is not having sex with any man. She had the morals to be waiting until she was married before having sex with any man even her betrothed fiance Joseph.

The Holy Spirit is an invisible, but personal being, a force of God, which can do many different things including enter into the uterus of Mary and impregnate one of her eggs. This is the only time God has done this so this being which Mary will carry and give birth too will be called the Son of God. After Mary became pregnant then she would carry the babe for the normal nine months. And then later her relationship with her husband would allow her to have several other children all conceived in a normal natural manner.

The Greek word for cousin has an indefinite meaning and might mean any relative more distant than a brother or sister. Mary did not doubt the miracle the angel had promised her, however at this time he also reported the miracle which had happened with Elizabeth, and she was six months pregnant at the time of the angel's appearance with Mary.

The angel goes on to explain the two miracles, there is nothing impossible for God to do. God will not do anything evil or wrong but nothing is too hard for Him.

No doubt, no exuberation, and no exultation. Just a yes Master as you will. I will do as you ask. A true servant of God's attitude.
