Luke 1:26 – 30

Christ’s Birth Announced to Mary (Part 1)

26 Now in the sixth month the angel Gabriel was sent by God to a city of Galilee named Nazareth,

27 to a virgin betrothed to a man whose name was Joseph, of the house of David. The virgin’s name was Mary.

28 And having come in, the angel said to her, “Rejoice, highly favored one, the Lord is with you; blessed are you among women!”

29 But when she saw him, she was troubled at his saying, and considered what manner of greeting this was.

Six months after Elizabeth conceives her child God sends the angel Gabriel to the town of Nazareth which is located in the province of Galilee. God sent Gabriel to give a message to a young woman named Mary.

Mary was a young woman who was engaged to a man named Joseph. Mary had not had any sexual relations with any man. She was what is defined as a virgin.

Joseph was a descendant of the great Jewish King David.

Gabriel enters the house where Mary is and gives her a friendly greeting indicating he is about to give her some good news.

God was going to grant her a very special favor because God had found her to be a very faithful woman and able to fulfill the responsibilities of the assignment she will be given.

She is blessed among women because it was known many women were desiring to be the mother of the Messiah.

We have no indication that Gabriel had identified himself yet. Angels normally when making appearances on earth look like common men.

A strange man had entered the house of Mary and greeted her favorably. Perhaps the appearance of a stranger in her home troubled Mary, or perhaps it was the unusual greeting he gave her, but it bothered Mary.
