Matthew 13:53 - 58

53 Now it came to pass, when Jesus had finished these parables, that He departed from there.

54 When He had come to His own country, He taught them in their synagogue, so that they were astonished and said, “Where did this Man get this wisdom and these mighty works?

55 Is this not the carpenter’s son? Is not His mother called Mary? And His brothers James, Joses, Simon, and Judas?

56 And His sisters, are they not all with us? Where then did this Man get all these things?”

57 So they were offended at Him.

But Jesus said to them, “A prophet is not without honor except in his own country and in his own house.”

58 Now He did not do many mighty works there because of their unbelief.

When Jesus finished teaching the parables in this chapter he left the town of Caesarea, where he was currently living and went back to his hometown, Bethlehem of Nazareth.

He now was in a synagogue where He was raised as the son of a carpenter. He had a humble raising, He was not sent off to a special school as the apostle Paul was. So the people of the synagogue were amazed at His teachings and His miraculous works they witnessed.

They knew Him, they knew His immediate family, they knew His mother, they knew His father and his profession, they knew His brothers and their names. They had no doubt as to this man's pedigree and were sure He did not have the background to speak as he taught and do miracles.

They knew of His sisters, where did He learn what He was teaching, how did He become enabled to heal, cast out demons, and raise people from the dead?

They were offended at Him because they could not believe in the authority He had because of His humble earthly life. They would not believe in the divine origin of Jesus as the Son of God.

Jesus points out people who know someone closely as they are raised often will not respect them after they are adults and prove what they are capable of.

Jesus did not refrain in doing miracles because their unbelief restricted His ability to do the works, but because He found their unbelief made them unworthy of His works.

(Matthew7:6;[“Do not give what is holy to the dogs; nor cast your pearls before swine, lest they trample them under their feet, and turn and tear you in pieces.])
