23 Now when He got into a boat, His disciples followed Him.
24 And suddenly a great tempest arose on the sea, so that the boat was covered with the waves. But He was asleep.
25 Then His disciples came to Him and awoke Him, saying, “Lord, save us! We are perishing!”
26 But He said to them, “Why are you fearful, O you of little faith?” Then He arose and rebuked the winds and the sea, and there was a great calm.
27 So the men marveled, saying, “Who can this be, that even the winds and the sea obey Him?”
Jesus and His closest followers, His disciples got into the boat to go to the other side of the Sea of Galilee. Obviously the multitude could not all fit into the boat.
The Sea of Galilee was known for sudden storms which would pop-up on the lake. Jesus and the disciples are engulfed in a storm while Jesus slept in the boat. The storm was severe enough the waves were breaking over the sides of the boat and threatening to sink the boat in the middle of the Sea.
These disciples had been with Jesus long enough and witnessed His power. They should have known as long as He was with them they would not come to harm. Their failure to have that belief gives Jesus the reason for telling them they had little faith.
He then did what they should have had confidence in, He calmed the storm with His words.
Every new miracle He does seems to astonish the disciples. The only distinguishing feature of this event is the fact that an inanimate thing like this storm which has no brain to register the commands, and nothing alive in the storm to obey His commands still obeyed His words.
“Even the winds and the sea obey Him?”
