17 Now Jesus, going up to Jerusalem, took the twelve disciples aside on the road and said to them,
18 “Behold, we are going up to Jerusalem, and the Son of Man will be betrayed to the chief priests and to the scribes; and they will condemn Him to death,
19 and deliver Him to the Gentiles to mock and to scourge and to crucify. And the third day He will rise again.”
Jesus and His 12 apostles (disciples) were on their way to Jerusalem when Jesus stopped them for a conversation.
This is the second time Jesus made the prediction about His death and resurrection to them the other was in Matthew 16:21, in this instance the disciples did not reply, evidently they all remembered the rebuke which Jesus gave Peter on the other occasion.
The Jews could condemn a man to death but could not execute him because under the rule of the Roman empire they did not have that authority for capital punishment.(John 18:31[ Then Pilate said to them, “You take Him and judge Him according to your law.” Therefore the Jews said to him, “It is not lawful for us to put anyone to death,”]) They had to take their cases to the Romans to get the sentence carried out.
