Luke 1:30 – 33

Christ’s Birth Announced to Mary (Part 2)

30 Then the angel said to her, “Do not be afraid, Mary, for you have found favor with God.

31 And behold, you will conceive in your womb and bring forth a Son, and shall call His name Jesus.

32 He will be great, and will be called the Son of the Highest; and the Lord God will give Him the throne of His father David.

33 And He will reign over the house of Jacob forever, and of His kingdom there will be no end.”

Gabriel eased her fear by telling her he was there because God was pleased with her.

There is a significance to the wording of this verse. In Matthew 3:9, John the baptist states that God can create children even from the rocks on the ground. To promise the virgin a child alone could mean her son would be given to her in a different way than carrying it in her own body. And this verse is the only place in the Bible that has the Greek word which this word, womb, comes from, and it is the only place which uses the word womb and conceiving together in the same sentence. It is significant that God tells Mary through the angel she would be carrying this child in her own body, and his name is selected for her at this time.

In verses 28 and 30 Gabriel praises Mary, after he does that he speaks of the greatness of the child she will carry, to describe him as the “Son of the Highest” is the same as calling him the Son of God.

The throne of David means the throne which David, his great ancestor, had prophesied he would be given. (Psalm 132:11)

The house of Jacob often is used to mean the Jewish nation in general, but in this case it refers to the people of God spiritually whether they be Jew or Gentile. This kingdom would have no end, it would be eternal. His kingdom refers to His church, which will be eternal, after the end of its existence on earth, at the end of the world, it will then exist in heaven. Revelation 21 & 22 explains the church is the bride of Christ and at the Day of Judgment it will take its place in heaven with Jesus.
