9 Now when He rose early on the first day of the week, He appeared first to Mary Magdalene, out of whom He had cast seven demons.
10 She went and told those who had been with Him, as they mourned and wept.
11 And when they heard that He was alive and had been seen by her, they did not believe.
The previous verses were at the tomb, this verse begins to tell of things which took place elsewhere following the resurrection.
The seven demons had nothing to do with the character of Mary, it was an affliction of which Jesus cured her of by casting out the demons. She was a good woman and recorded as being interested in the work and fate of Jesus. (Matthew 27:61; 28:1; Mark 16:1; John 19:25, 20:14 – 15) Of course all of these references refer to the visit to the tomb and the announcing of the resurrection
After seeing the risen savior she goes and reports what she had seen to the disciples.
This period of mourning fulfills the prediction Jesus made in Mark 2:20 (But the days will come when the bridegroom will be taken away from them, and then they will fast in those days.)
The disciples thought it was too good to be true, so they did not believe her. Jesus rebukes them for their unbelief in Luke 24:25 (Then He said to them, “O foolish ones, and slow of heart to believe in all that the prophets have spoken!)
