46 While He was still talking to the multitudes, behold, His mother and brothers stood outside, seeking to speak with Him.
47 Then one said to Him, “Look, Your mother and Your brothers are standing outside, seeking to speak with You.”
48 But He answered and said to the one who told Him, “Who is My mother and who are My brothers?”
49 And He stretched out His hand toward His disciples and said, “Here are My mother and My brothers!
50 For whoever does the will of My Father in heaven is My brother and sister and mother.”
Jesus is in a house talking to His disciples when His mother, Mary and His brothers come to talk to Him.
Some say that these brothers are from a different mother because Mary remained a virgin all of her life. These brothers and His sisters were all born with Mary as their mother, she was a normal woman with normal reproductive procedures. Matthew in His writing here uses words which indicate in the original that these brothers and sisters were the children of Mary, there would have been different words describing His brothers if Mary had remained a virgin all of her life and they were the children of a different mother.
We have to be careful we do not make it seem Jesus is disrespectful to His mother. He would never give his mother the less respect than she deserved as His mother.
Jesus is setting a lesson down to the disciples, not ignoring or disrespecting His family.
Jesus' question does not show He is going to ignore or disrespect His family.
Jesus answers His own question, He points out those who are currently with Him. He points out they are now His family. There are men and women in the group of people who are His disciples so he names parts of the family which are appropriate.
When we do the will of God we are then family with Jesus, sisters and brothers. We are closer than blood family when we are part of Jesus spiritual family.
