John 5:24 - 30

“Most assuredly, I say to you, he who hears My word and believes in Him who sent Me has everlasting life, and shall not come into judgment, but has passed from death into life. Most assuredly, I say to you, the hour is coming, and now is, when the dead will hear the voice of the Son of God; and those who hear will live. For as the Father has life in Himself, so He has granted the Son to have life in Himself, and has given Him authority to execute judgment also, because He is the Son of Man. Do not marvel at this; for the hour is coming in which all who are in the graves will hear His voice and come forth—those who have done good, to the resurrection of life, and those who have done evil, to the resurrection of condemnation. I can of Myself do nothing. As I hear, I judge; and My judgment is righteous, because I do not seek My own will but the will of the Father who sent Me.

“And He came down with them and stood on a level place with a crowd of His disciples and a great multitude of people from all Judea and Jerusalem, and from the seacoast of Tyre and Sidon, who came to hear Him and be healed of their diseases.”

Luke 6:17

JESUS HEALS A GREAT MULTITUDE

By Jay H. Graham

From the Chapel Glen Church of Christ Bulletin

Consider the paragraph in Luke 6:17-19. It seems that Jesus’ ministry, in particular, His healings of hundreds of people, if not more, is beginning to reach a new level. This particular paragraph highlights the multitude of people seeking healing from Jesus. No doubt, these various afflictions probably range from what might be considered minor issues to major issues such as blindness, those who are deaf, to those paralyzed and probably even those heading toward death. Jesus is attracting them all.

People were coming from near and far ranging throughout the land of Judea. Word seems to be spreading like wildfire. Consider how this might happen today. Are there any of us who do not know of someone who might be a family member, they might be a neighbor, even those who know someone who knows someone dealing with a serious affliction. What would we do with this information if we heard of a man who has the power to miraculously heal those in need? We would get word to them or someone they may know who could get those with afflictions to this man. Ultimately, it would lead to multitudes rushing to be healed!

Is this happening anywhere in our modern time? No. There are many today who believe that men still have the ability to heal others, like Jesus was doing. Those who claim to have such abilities are charlatans, who seem to only want money and power. They have their big shows and invite people to come watch these so-called healing services. One, consider if these modern attempts were actually true, imagine the multitudes of those with afflictions, how they would be like these multitudes who sought after Jesus? Is that happening? Human nature would demand it happen as it did with Jesus. But such multitudes are not seeking those who claim to be able to heal! Two, Jesus was not seeking riches! He did not require payment, nor did He beg for funds! Yet, there are many who fall to these deceptions today.

We see that Jesus and His ability to heal is attracting people from all over Judea and Jerusalem. People are coming from the sea- coast to seek what Jesus is offering. It also says in vs 17, many are coming to not just be healed or watch Jesus, but they are coming to hear Him. This is even more spectacular! For what they would hear would be much more important to their souls and spirits. Jesus was teaching the need to repent of their sins and be prepared for the coming kingdom that was shortly coming to pass. This message would promise healing for something much more horrible than mere physical afflictions. Jesus’ message would promise healing of sin and yes, even death. Jesus never promised to end physical death while this earth remained, but more importantly, He promised a way and an opportunity to live everlasting life with the Creator for all eternity. Jesus came to being life!

This number are those who recognize their need for true righteousness, not the false self-righteousness of the Jewish leaders. This number recognizes the need to seek the Lord’s righteousness and holiness. Righteousness that is pure and real. Righteousness that leads to humility, godliness and salvation. Yes, Jesus’ teaching is attracting those seeking the kingdom of God. Jesus was giving the people “Hope” as only He can provide.

And then it says in vs 19--

And the whole multitude sought to touch Him, for power went out from Him and healed them all.

Why were they seeking to “touch” Jesus? “Power” was coming out from Him. The implication is that people were being healed just by touching Jesus. I am reminded of the woman who sought healing by touching Jesus’ garment in Mk 5:25-35. Or those in Acts 19:12 who sought to touch Paul’s handkerchiefs or aprons, for they could be healed of their afflictions.

Of course, the important theme continues. If Jesus can heal physical afflictions, then He can grant you spiritual healing, for as Jesus asked at least once, which is easier, to heal miraculously or to forgive sins? Jesus proved by healing many physical afflictions that He can more importantly, forgive and heal mankind of sin. As the prophet wrote over 2 and a half millennia ago,

Isaiah 61:1 1 “The Spirit of the Lord GOD is upon Me, because the LORD has anointed Me to preach good tidings to the poor; He has sent Me to heal the brokenhearted, to proclaim liberty to the captives, and the opening of the prison to those who are bound.
